Hey friends,
Most Salesforce certification exams cost $200 USD to register and $100 USD to retake, plus local taxes. Architect-level exams cost more: the Platform Data Architect exam is $400, with a $200 retake. That's the short answer, and it comes straight from the official exam guides.
I didn't want to give you one number and hope it applies to your exam, so I pulled the fee section from eight current exam guides on Salesforce Help. Here they are side by side, plus what it costs to keep a cert once you have it.

A few patterns jump out:
- The price doesn't follow the difficulty. Admin, App Builder, Developer and Agentforce Specialist all cost the same $200, even though passing scores range from 68% to 73%.
- A retake is half price. Every guide I checked sets the retake at half the registration fee.
- Architect exams double it. Data Architect is $400 to sit and $200 to retake.
- Prerequisites add cost indirectly. The two Agentforce consultant exams require the Administrator certification first, so the real price of entry is two exams.
Fees in Japan are listed in yen: JPY 30,000 to register and JPY 15,000 to retake for the $200 exams. Every guide adds "plus applicable taxes as required per local law", so your checkout total depends on where you live.
What one certification really costs
The fee is fixed. What changes is how many times you pay it. Here's the math:
A retake costs you $100 and about a month of momentum.
That's why I care so much about not booking too early. Passing first time is the cheapest outcome by a mile. Before you book, take a timed practice set and run your score through the exam score calculator. If you're not clearing the passing score with room to spare, wait a week.
The cost of keeping it
Once you pass, each certification has a maintenance requirement on Trailhead. From the guides:
- Administrator, Platform Developer, JavaScript Developer, Data Architect, Sales Consultant: a certification maintenance badge on Trailhead once a year.
- Agentforce Specialist: a certification maintenance module on Trailhead once a year.
- Platform App Builder: a maintenance badge three times a year. That's the odd one out, so plan for it.
Every guide carries the same warning: if you don't finish your maintenance by the due date, the certification expires. The real cost there is a full-price exam to get it back, so put the due date in your calendar the day you pass.

The exam is the only required spend. Trailhead modules and trailmixes cost nothing, and I wrote up how to prep for the Admin exam without paying for a course. The official guide is free too, and it's the most useful study document you'll read: the section weights tell you exactly where the questions come from.
Where paid prep earns its money is practice: lots of realistic questions with clear explanations, so you find your weak spots before the exam does. That's the gap my Cert Labs fill.
Which exam to pay for first
If you're starting out, I'd spend the first $200 on one of these:
- Administrator if you want an admin or consultant role, and because two Agentforce consultant exams require it. Start with my Admin certification guide.

Quick answers
Do all exams cost $200? No. Every associate-to-specialist level guide I checked is $200, but architect exams are higher. Data Architect is $400.
Is maintenance an extra exam? No. It's a Trailhead badge or module, not a proctored exam. Miss it and you lose the cert, though.
