Agentforce for Sales: SDR, Coach & Sales Agents Explained

Header image: Agentforce for Sales, a rep request routed through Agentforce to the Engagement agent and Sales Coach.

Hey friends,

Agentforce for Sales is a set of AI agents that do sales work inside Salesforce: the Engagement agent (the old SDR agent) emails and qualifies prospects around the clock, Agentforce Sales Coach role-plays deals with your reps, and agents like Forecasting Agent and Get Forecast Guidance help managers call the number. Each one runs on your CRM data, with permissions you control.

If you're studying for the Agentforce Sales Consultant exam, this is Predictive and Generative AI (13% of the exam guide) plus a good chunk of Sales Lifecycle. The guide asks you to know when to use Agentforce Sales features and related products. That means knowing what each agent needs before it works, and that's what this post covers.

What happened to the Agentforce SDR agent?

It was renamed twice. Salesforce Help now says: "The Agentforce Lead Nurturing name has changed to Agentforce Engagement", to separate it from the newer Agentforce Lead Generation agent template (Agentforce Engagement Overview). So SDR agent, Lead Nurturing agent and Engagement agent are the same thing. You'll still see SDR in permission names and older Trailhead content.

What does the Engagement agent do?

Help lists the work it does on its own:

  • Sends a customized first email using data from the lead, contact or person account record
  • Sends a nudge email when the prospect doesn't reply
  • Answers prospect questions with responses grounded in your company data (files you upload)
  • Hands interested prospects to the rep with a meeting link from the record owner's calendar, and copies the rep
  • Handles off-topic replies and opt-out requests

The record owner doesn't change. When a prospect is assigned to the agent, the agent adds it to a special Sales Engagement cadence and works it from there. Every email shows in the prospect's Activity Timeline.

You can assign prospects three ways: global assignment rules in the agent settings, Automated Actions created by a rep or manager, or the Assign to Agent action on the record or list view.

What does the Engagement agent need before it works?

It's available in Enterprise, Performance and Unlimited editions with Sales and Einstein for Sales. It also leans on several other features, which is exactly the kind of dependency the exam likes to test (Help):

FeatureWhy the agent needs it
Sales EngagementThe special cadence the agent uses to plan and track outreach
Einstein Activity CaptureKeeps the agent's email and calendar in sync with Salesforce
Einstein Generative AIDrafts emails and creates summaries
Salesforce Email ProductivityOutlook and Gmail integration
Automated ActionsAdds and removes prospects from cadences
Data 360Auditing, feedback, the Einstein Trust Layer and grounding

Two gotchas from the same page and the considerations page: if Activity 360 Reporting is on, Agentforce Engagement doesn't work. And the Owner field must be filled on the prospect before you assign it (for contacts, the owner of the related account).

A bit about how I study. I loved Focus on Force when I was earning my first certifications, and I learned fastest from rapid-fire practice tests, not from rereading. So Cert Lab is built around fast testing, with every explanation linked to current Salesforce Help pages and screenshots. Certifications got me interviews, hires, raises and moves into new domains. Experience still matters most, so pair the cert with something real you can talk about.

How do you set up the Engagement agent?

The setup in Set Up Agentforce Engagement follows five steps:

  1. Turn on Engagement and its supporting features. Agentforce turns on the extra features for you.
  2. Assign permissions. Managers get Configure Engagement Agent; reps get Use Engagement Agent.
  3. Create the agent's user record. It uses a special Einstein Agent license so it can work on its own, with its own email account.
  4. Configure data in an Agentforce Data Library: product and service files the agent uses to write emails and answer questions.
  5. Configure and activate the agent: when and how often it reaches out, language and tone, and which prospects it gets automatically.

One permission detail worth remembering: the Configure Engagement Agent permission set includes Manage AI Agents, which gives org-wide management access to all agents, not just this one (Engagement Agent Permission Sets). Assign it carefully.

What are the Agentforce Engagement limits?

These come from Considerations for Using Agentforce Engagement:

  • Email volume: up to 1,800 emails a day with a Gmail account, or 9,800 with Microsoft Exchange. At the limit, it stops until the next day.
  • Agents per org: up to 20 sales agents by default.
  • Manual approval: with Require Manual Approval on, the owner has 14 calendar days to approve each email before the agent cancels it.
  • Deployment: don't use change sets or metadata to deploy Engagement agents. Create and edit them in Setup or Agentforce Builder.
  • Consumption: the agent uses one Conversation when it sends the first email to a prospect. Restarting it for the same prospect uses another.
  • Same domain: if a prospect's email domain matches the agent user's domain, Einstein Activity Capture treats them as internal and the agent can't reply.

What is Agentforce Sales Coach?

Sales Coach lets reps practice a deal before the real conversation. It runs role-plays where the agent plays a buyer, then gives feedback. Each role-play is driven by a subagent with a classification description, a scope and instructions. Salesforce ships examples like "Always respond as a prospective buyer in this interaction" and "Never break character from the prospective buyer" (Role-Play Subagent Customization).

You can customize the instructions, for example to mention competitors so the pricing talk feels real. One rule to know: you can't add actions to the standard role-play subagents (Negotiation/Review Role-Play and Proposal Quote Role Play). Actions only work on Feedback subagents.

It's available in Enterprise, Performance, Unlimited and Developer Editions with Foundations or Agentforce 1 Editions (Setting Up Agentforce Sales Coach).

Which Agentforce for Sales scenarios show up on the exam?

Expect scenarios, not definitions. A few I'd practice:

  • A company wants leads followed up overnight without hiring. Engagement agent, with the right assignment rules.
  • A sales VP wants new reps to rehearse pricing objections. Sales Coach role-play.
  • Agent emails stopped after lunch. Check the daily send limit for the email provider.
  • An admin wants to deploy the agent with a change set. Wrong answer; build it in Setup or Agentforce Builder.

FAQ

Is the SDR agent the same as Agentforce Engagement?

Yes. Agentforce Lead Nurturing (the SDR agent) was renamed Agentforce Engagement. Permission names and older content still say SDR.

Does the agent take ownership of my leads?

No. The record owner stays the same. The agent adds the prospect to a special Sales Engagement cadence.

Can the agent send from the rep's email?

Yes, with Send as Seller. The record owners need email connected to Inbox and Einstein Activity Capture.

Which editions support it?

Enterprise, Performance and Unlimited, with Sales and Einstein for Sales.
