Hey friends,
A Salesforce certification is a proctored exam that you register for in Trailhead Academy and take online or at a Pearson VUE testing center. Pass it and the credential shows on your Trailblazer profile. Most certifications then stay active with one Trailhead maintenance badge a year, and Foundations certifications never expire. That's the whole system, and it comes from Salesforce's own certification overview and maintenance pages.
This guide walks through the process in the order you'll meet it: picking a first exam, what the exam looks like, how to register, what happens on exam day, what a retake involves and how to keep the credential active. Fees change, so I've left prices out and pointed to the pages that list them.
How Salesforce certification works, in six steps
- Have a Trailblazer profile. Your certifications live there. If you already have one from Trailhead, use that one, because Salesforce says not to create a second profile just for certifications (New Certification Experience FAQ).
- Log in to Trailhead Academy with that profile. Your Trailhead Academy account holds your legal name, employer, address and privacy choices, and it's the home for every certification exam.
- Pick a certification. Under Certifications, choose Find a Certification and filter by product, role or level. Each exam's detail page shows the topics it covers, who it's for and its exam guide.
- Prepare. The exam guide lists what's tested, how heavily, and which Trailhead material Salesforce recommends.
- Register, schedule and pay. Click Register Now, choose Online or a testing center, confirm your legal name, and finish scheduling and checkout on Pearson's site.
- Take the exam, then keep it active. You see a pass or fail result as soon as you finish, and most certifications need a yearly Trailhead maintenance badge.
Steps 3 and 5 follow Help's article on how to schedule an online-proctored exam. One thing to know if you're following an older guide or video: since July 21, 2025, Salesforce certification registration runs through Trailhead Academy and Pearson VUE. Webassessor, the previous system, was replaced (FAQ).
Get started: pick your first certification
Help's certification overview groups certifications into tracks by role: Administrators, Architects, Consultants, Developers, Designers, Marketers, Sales professionals and more. Pick the track that matches the work you do or want to do, then read the exam guide for the entry-level exam in it.
If you've never used Salesforce, Platform Foundations is the gentle start. Its exam guide lists no prerequisite and no retake fee. If you already build or support a Salesforce org, Platform Administrator is where I'd begin. It also lists no prerequisite, but its guide describes candidates with 6 or more months of experience as an administrator. My post on the best Salesforce certification for beginners compares the two in detail, and Salesforce certifications for admins covers what comes next.
A few things apply to any first exam:
- Read the exam guide before anything else. It's free, and the section weights tell you where the questions come from. The Platform Administrator guide, for example, has eight sections that range from 8% (Agentforce) to 17% (Data and Analytics Management).
- Get hands-on. Use a Trailhead Playground or a Developer Edition org and click through each feature the guide names. My Trailhead for beginners post lists the best first trails.
- Practice the way the exam asks. Many objectives in the guides begin with "Given a scenario", so test yourself on scenario-style multiple choice under a timer. The science of studying for Salesforce certifications explains active recall and spaced repetition, and the exam score calculator turns a practice score into a pass estimate.
- Match the time to your life. As a rough estimate, people with full-time jobs often use a few weeks to a couple of months for a first exam. My 6-week Admin study plan is one way to pace it.
What a certification exam looks like
Every exam has its own guide with the question count, time limit and passing score. Each name below links to its guide, and the passing scores are for the English exams:
| Exam | Questions | Time | Passing score |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform Foundations | 40 | 70 min | 62% |
| Platform Administrator | 60 | 105 min | 68% |
| Platform Developer | 60 | 105 min | 68% |
| Agentforce Specialist | 60 | 105 min | 72% |
All four are multiple-choice, none lists a prerequisite, and each guide says the exam can also include up to five unscored questions that are mixed in at random and have no effect on your result. No hard-copy or online materials may be referenced during the exam. Some other certifications do list a prerequisite, so check the guide for yours.
Scoring is simple, per Help's exam scoring page. Each question is worth one point. If a question asks for more than one answer, you must pick every correct option, and there's no partial credit. There's no penalty for an unanswered question, and if time runs out the exam submits automatically and scores what you answered. You can flag any question and come back to it from the review screen.
Your pass or fail depends on one overall percentage. The section percentages on your score report are feedback only, and Salesforce says you can't average them to work out your real score.

These are the steps from Help's article on scheduling an online-proctored exam. The testing-center route starts the same way, and Help's scheduling overview lists what each option needs.
- In Trailhead Academy, open the exam's detail page and click Register Now. Pick Online or the testing-center option.
- Verify your legal name. It must match the government-issued ID you'll show on exam day, and you can't change it once scheduling is complete.
- Trailhead Academy sends you to Pearson to schedule and pay. Choose your exam language, accept the exam and Salesforce policies, confirm your time zone, then pick a date and start time.
- Review the cart, add a voucher or promo code if you have one, and check out. A confirmation email follows, and the exam appears under Upcoming on your Trailhead Academy home page.
- For an online exam, run the system test. Your computer must run Windows 10 or macOS 14 or higher, and Salesforce says to disconnect any VPN or screenshot tool before the exam starts.
Plans change. Under the reschedule and cancellation policy, online exams can be rescheduled or cancelled free of charge more than 24 hours before the start time, and testing-center exams more than 48 hours before. Miss your slot without contacting Salesforce Help and you're a no-show, charged the full exam fee.
Online or at a testing center?
Every proctored exam can be taken either way, so pick whichever you'll be calmer in.
| Online (Pearson OnVUE) | Testing center (Pearson VUE) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | Home or office, watched by a remote proctor through your webcam and microphone | A Pearson VUE testing facility |
| Equipment | Your own compatible computer and internet connection | Provided for you |
| Before exam day | Check system requirements, confirm your ID meets the requirements and run the system test | Confirm your ID meets the requirements |
| On the day | Launch from Trailhead Academy 20 to 30 minutes early, then go through the proctor's security pre-check | Bring that ID, with the name exactly as booked |
Sources: the overview, the scheduling page and the online proctoring guide. During an online exam you also get a digital whiteboard for notes, and a chat icon to message the proctor. Exam delivery isn't allowed on mobile devices, though you can register from one.
Exam day results and your certificate
When you submit the exam you get an immediate pass or fail result, plus section-level feedback that follows the sections in the exam guide. Results and, if you passed, your certificate also arrive by email. Allow up to 24 hours for the email and for your My Dashboard page to update.
If you pass, your certificate of completion is attached to the results email and your logo appears on your Trailblazer profile. Lost the email? You can resend the certificate and download the logo from the profile (Help). Salesforce doesn't mail printed certificates.
If you don't pass
The retake policy gives you 3 attempts at the same exam in each release cycle (Spring, Summer and Winter):
- After a first failed attempt, wait 24 hours before registering again.
- After a second failed attempt, wait 14 days.
- After a third, wait until the next release cycle begins. Attempts reset then.
A retake costs half the original exam fee, and Foundations exams have no retake fee. Use the section feedback to decide what to study before the second attempt.
Keeping your certification active
After you pass, you complete a Trailhead maintenance badge once a year. Help's maintenance page says deadlines follow the three Salesforce releases, and that you shouldn't rely only on reminder emails because meeting the deadline is your responsibility. Here's how a few popular certifications line up:
| Certification | Maintenance requirement | Release cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Platform Administrator | Platform Administrator certification maintenance badge | Spring |
| Platform Developer | Platform Developer certification maintenance badge | Winter |
| Platform App Builder | Platform App Builder certification maintenance badge | Winter |
| Agentforce Specialist | Agentforce Specialist certification maintenance badge | Summer |
| Platform Foundations | Not required, never expires | N/A |
Three details are worth knowing:
- One badge can cover several certifications. The entry-level Platform Administrator badge also maintains Platform Administrator II, even if you earn higher certifications later.
- Check your status on your Trailblazer profile. It shows Active, Maintenance Due, Expiring Soon, Expired or Retired. After you finish a badge, allow up to 24 hours for the status to update (Help).
- Missing the deadline expires the certification. Every certification maintained by that badge expires, and any certification that needs an expired one as a prerequisite expires with it. You can ask Salesforce for reinstatement through a support case, but it's reviewed case by case and not guaranteed. If it has been expired for more than one cycle, you retake the exam at full price (Help).
Salesforce also retires certifications from time to time. Help says 24 certifications retire on February 1, 2027, and that a retired certification is still valid, stays visible on your Trailblazer profile marked as retired and needs no more maintenance (2027 Certification Retirements FAQ). The retirements are why I'd always check the live catalog before you commit to an exam.
Mistakes that trip people up
- Following pre-2025 instructions. Guides that tell you to register in Webassessor are out of date. Start in Trailhead Academy.
- A legal name that doesn't match your ID. It can't be changed after you've scheduled, and the proctor checks it against your ID.
- Skipping the system test. Run it on the same computer you'll use on exam day, and re-run it if you switch devices.
- Booking before you're scoring comfortably. This is my advice, not a Salesforce rule: take a timed practice set first, and book when you clear the passing score with room to spare.
- Forgetting maintenance after you pass. Put the due date in your calendar the day you pass.
- Splitting your certifications across two accounts. Use one Trailblazer profile. If you took exams in the old system, Salesforce says to make sure that profile uses the email linked to your old Webassessor account.
FAQ
What is a Salesforce certification?
It's a credential you earn by passing a proctored Salesforce exam, and it appears on your Trailblazer profile.
Is there a Salesforce CRM certification?
Salesforce groups its certifications into role-based tracks, so there isn't one CRM exam. If you work with the core Salesforce platform, Platform Administrator is where I'd start.
How do I get Salesforce certified?
Log in to Trailhead Academy, pick an exam, click Register Now, choose online or a testing center, then schedule and pay through Pearson. Pass the exam and the certification is added to your profile.
Where do I register for a Salesforce certification exam?
In Trailhead Academy, which sends you to Pearson to schedule and pay. Salesforce moved certification there from Webassessor on July 21, 2025.
Can I take Salesforce certification exams online?
Yes. Every proctored exam can be taken online with a remote proctor (Pearson OnVUE) or at a Pearson VUE testing center.
How many questions are on a Salesforce certification exam?
It depends on the exam. Platform Administrator has 60 multiple-choice questions plus up to five unscored in 105 minutes, with a 68% passing score for the English exam. Platform Foundations has 40 questions in 70 minutes with a 62% passing score.
Do Salesforce certifications expire?
Yes, if you skip maintenance. Most certifications need one Trailhead maintenance badge a year or they expire, while Foundations certifications need none and never expire.
What happens if I fail a Salesforce certification exam?
You can retake it after 24 hours. After a second failed attempt in the same release cycle you wait 14 days, and after a third you wait for the next release cycle.
Where can I see what an exam costs?
Each exam guide lists the registration and retake fee. My Salesforce certification cost post compares the fees side by side.
