Hey friends,
If you're a total beginner, start Trailhead with the Your Guide to Trailhead module, then work through Salesforce User Basics, Platform Basics, Accounts and Contacts, Leads and Opportunities, Data Modeling, Data Security and Reports & Dashboards. That order takes you from "what is this?" to understanding how a real org is put together, and it lines up with the beginner Salesforce certification.
Trailhead is Salesforce's free learning site, and there is a lot of it. That's great, and also the problem: beginners click around, earn random badges and still can't explain what an object is. This post gives you a short, ordered list so every hour counts.
How does Trailhead work?
Trailhead's own Get Started with Trailhead unit lays out the building blocks. Here they are in one table, with why each one matters to you as a learner.

Start with modules and trails. Superbadges and certifications come later.
The Trailhead Playground is the secret weapon. It's a free practice org, a special kind of Developer Edition org, where you can click around and break things without hurting anyone. Trailhead creates one when you sign up, and you can have up to 10 at a time (Platform Basics). Do the hands-on challenges in it. That's where things stick.
What are the best first 10 trails for beginners?
Here's the order I'd do them in. Most are single modules, so you finish something fast and keep momentum. The last one is a full trail.
- Your Guide to Trailhead. How Trailhead works: badges, trails, trailmixes, superbadges and your profile.
- Salesforce User Basics. What CRM means, how to get around Salesforce and how to work with your admin.
- Agentforce 360 Platform Basics. Objects, records, fields, apps and orgs, plus your first Trailhead Playground.
- Accounts and Contacts. The two objects almost every org is built around.
- Leads and Opportunities. How a prospect becomes a deal, and what lead conversion creates.
- Data Modeling. Standard and custom objects, relationships and Schema Builder.
- Data Security. Who can see what: org-wide defaults, roles, sharing rules and permissions.
- Reports & Dashboards for Lightning Experience. Turning records into answers your manager actually reads.
- AgentExchange Basics. The Salesforce marketplace (formerly AppExchange) and how packages install.
- Prepare for Your Salesforce Platform Foundations Certification. The official trail for the beginner certification, once the basics click.
If you want more admin depth after that, the Admin Beginner trail is the natural next step. I'd also add Lightning Experience Customization and Formulas and Validations once the list above feels easy.
Quick backstory. Focus on Force was my favorite resource on the way to 17 Salesforce certifications. Somewhere along the way I noticed I learned way faster when I stopped rereading and took practice tests rapid-fire, over and over, reading why every miss was wrong. So I built Cert Lab around that loop, with up-to-date Help links and screenshots in every explanation. It's designed to test you to success. And the payoff is real: a cert teaches you what matters fast, gives you a credential, and has gotten me interviews and raises.

Let the Platform Foundations Cert Lab test you to success
Trailhead teaches the concepts. Cert Lab checks you actually know them, with fast quizzes for every exam section and an explanation for every answer.

- Do the hands-on challenges, not just the quizzes. Clicking through Setup in a playground teaches you where things live, and the exam asks about exactly that.
- Say it out loud. After each module, explain it in two sentences. If you can't, redo the unit before moving on.
- Don't chase points. Badges are nice, but depth beats a long badge list. Ten modules you understand beat fifty you skimmed.
- Test yourself early. A few practice questions after each module show you what you missed while it's still fresh.
- Ask for help. Other Trailblazers are generous with answers. Heads up: Trailhead says the online Trailblazer Community becomes read-only on October 30, 2026, as new community conversations move to Slack.
What mistakes do beginners make on Trailhead?
- Starting with advanced topics. Flow or Apex before you know what a record is makes everything harder.
- Using a production org for challenges. Always use a Trailhead Playground.
- Skipping security. Data Security feels dry, but who can see what is one of the most practical things you'll learn.
- Treating badges as the finish line. The goal is a skill, and ideally a certification that proves it.
Which certification should a Trailhead beginner aim for?
The beginner-level exam is Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations (it used to be called Salesforce Associate). The official exam guide says there's no prerequisite and it's aimed at people with up to six months of Salesforce user experience (Platform Foundations exam guide). The list above covers most of what it tests. My Platform Foundations study guide maps the four exam sections in detail, and you can try a free lesson from the lab to see how the practice works.
FAQ
Is Trailhead free?
Yes. Trailhead is Salesforce's free online learning platform, and Trailhead Playgrounds are free too.
Do I need a Salesforce job to use Trailhead?
No. You sign up with your own account, and Trailhead gives you a playground org to practice in.
How long does the first 10 take?
It depends on your pace. Each module shows an estimated time on its page, so add those up and plan a few short sessions a week.
Trail, module or trailmix: which should I pick?
Start with the ordered list above. Use trails when you want someone else's order, and build a trailmix when you know exactly what you need.
Where should you go next?
- Platform Foundations practice questions to see what the exam asks.
- Salesforce data modeling for a deeper take on objects and relationships.
- The Salesforce security model once the Data Security module clicks.
Studying for something else too? All my labs are on the Cert Lab page, and the Administrator lab is free.
