Hey friends,
The Salesforce Associate certification is now called Platform Foundations, and it costs $75 plus local taxes to register. Retakes are free, there's no prerequisite and no maintenance is required right now. Those numbers come from Salesforce's Certification Exam Pricing page and the Platform Foundations exam guide.
That makes it the cheapest way into a real Salesforce certification. Below is what you'll actually pay, how vouchers and retakes work, and how to avoid the one fee that can still catch you. If you want the cost of every other exam, see my Salesforce certification cost breakdown.
How much does the Platform Foundations exam cost?

A quarter of the price of most exams, with free retakes on top.
Salesforce lists Platform Foundations under its Foundations exam pricing, where every Foundations exam is $75, tax excluded, and the retake price is free. Taxes are collected by Pearson, the exam delivery provider, when you register.
What do you get for the fee?
| Exam fact | Platform Foundations |
|---|---|
| Questions | 40 multiple choice, plus up to five unscored |
| Time | 70 minutes |
| Passing score | 62% |
| Delivery | Proctored, onsite or online |
| References allowed | None |
The four sections and their weights:
| Exam section | Weight |
|---|---|
| Salesforce Ecosystem | 32% |
| Navigation | 28% |
| Data Model | 25% |
| Reports & Dashboards | 15% |
All of that is from the exam guide. Unscored questions are mixed in at random and don't affect your result, so answer everything as if it counts.
How do retakes work?
The retake is free, but the timing rules still apply. Salesforce's retake policy gives you three attempts at the same exam per release cycle:
- Fail the first attempt: wait 24 hours before registering again.
- Fail the second attempt: wait 14 days.
- Fail the third attempt: wait until the next release cycle, when attempts reset.
So a free retake costs you nothing in money, but it can cost you two weeks or a whole release cycle. That's the real price of booking before you're ready.
Here's why I care about testing yourself. I earned 17 Salesforce certifications, and Focus on Force was a big part of that. My early approach was study guide first, tests later. Flipping it, rapid-fire practice tests with the explanations right there, cut my study time way down. Cert Lab is my version of that, with up-to-date links and screenshots, built to test you to success. A cert won't replace experience, but it gets you learning the right things fast and gets your resume noticed.

Yes, if you have one. Per Salesforce's voucher policies FAQ:
- You enter the code at checkout in the Add Voucher or Promo Code field, when you register through Trailhead Academy.
- Vouchers are single use, specific to the exams they were issued for, and can't be combined with other offers.
- Only one voucher per registration.
- Check the voucher email for which exams it covers and when it expires. You must sit the exam by that date.
The same FAQ lists where discounted vouchers tend to come from: qualifying partners and Signature or Premier customers, Salesforce events such as Dreamforce, and community events with giveaways. If your employer is a partner or Signature/Premier customer, ask before you pay.
Is there any fee that can still catch you?
Yes: missing your appointment. Salesforce's reschedule and cancellation policy says you can reschedule or cancel for free if you do it at least 24 hours before an online exam, or 48 hours before a testing center exam. Miss it without contacting Salesforce Help first and you're a no-show, charged the full fee. If you paid with a voucher, it's forfeited.
Is the Platform Foundations certification worth $75?
For a beginner, I think so. It's a real Salesforce credential you can put on your resume and Trailblazer profile, it forces you to learn the core of the platform in a structured way, and there's no yearly maintenance to keep up. The guide says it's aimed at people with up to six months of Salesforce user experience. My Platform Foundations study guide covers the four sections and their weights, and you can try a free lesson from the lab before you buy anything.
What cost mistakes should you avoid?
- Booking too early because retakes are free. The waiting periods are the real cost.
- Booking the wrong exam with a voucher. Vouchers are exam specific.
- Rescheduling inside the window. Under 24 hours (online) or 48 hours (testing center) and you lose the fee.
- Paying for prep you don't need. Trailhead is free. Spend on practice that shows you what you don't know.
FAQ
Is the Salesforce Associate exam still available?
Not under that name. The beginner exam is now Salesforce Certified Platform Foundations.
Is the Platform Foundations retake really free?

Do I need to maintain the certification?
The exam guide says there's no required maintenance for Platform Foundations at this time.
Do I need another certification first?
No. The exam guide lists no prerequisite.
Where should you go next?
- Platform Foundations practice questions before you book.
- Exam score calculator to check you're clearing 62% with room to spare.
