Einstein Bots vs Agentforce Service Agents

Header image: Einstein Bots vs Agentforce, a versus card comparing a service agent that reasons with subagents against an Einstein bot built from scripted dialogs.

Hey friends,

Einstein Bots follow scripted dialogs you design; Agentforce Service agents use AI reasoning to understand the customer, choose an action and complete it on their own. As of August 17, 2026, Einstein Bots is in maintenance mode, so Salesforce recommends Agentforce for any new AI agent implementation.

Existing bots keep working and stay supported. They just won't get new features (Set Up Enhanced Bots). Here's how the two compare, when a bot still makes sense, and how to move. Recommending the right AI tool for a service process is part of Intake and Interaction Channels, 13% of the Agentforce Service Consultant exam.

What's the real difference between a bot and an AI agent?

Salesforce's own wording is the clearest: bots rely on scripted conversations and require some human involvement, while an AI agent works as an autonomous member of your support team, using the Salesforce reasoning engine to carry on realistic conversations and complete actions (Messaging introduction).

A bot is a decision tree with language understanding on top. An agent is closer to a junior rep with a strict job description.

If the customer can phrase it a hundred ways, that's agent territory.

What are standard and enhanced bots?

If you still run bots, you need this distinction, because it decides which channels a bot can use.

Standard botsEnhanced bots
ChannelsLegacy Chat and standard messaging channelsEnhanced Chat, enhanced WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger, Bring Your Own Channel, Slack, Einstein Bots API v5 and later
RoutingDirect connections and transfersOmni-Channel flows in and out
Rich contentNot supportedFiles in and out, enhanced links, time selectors, dynamic questions
CloningAs standard or enhancedAs enhanced only

Two consequences: standard bots can't be used in enhanced channels, and Legacy Chat was retired on February 14, 2026 (Replace Legacy Chat with Enhanced Chat). If you clone a standard bot as an enhanced bot, Salesforce creates two Omni-Channel flows for you: an inbound flow to the bot and an outbound flow from the bot to reps or queues (Trailhead).

I'll be honest about how I learned this stuff. I loved Focus on Force and used it through 17 Salesforce certifications. Reading the study guide first was slow for me; taking practice tests rapid-fire and studying every wrong answer was fast. So when I built Cert Lab, I built it around that: test yourself quickly, see why each option is right or wrong, with up-to-date links and screenshots.

When does an Einstein bot still make sense?

  • You already run one that works and the flow is short and predictable, like collecting an order number before a handoff.
  • Every step must be fixed and auditable, with no room for the tool to choose a different path.
  • You're not licensed for Agentforce yet and need something on your enhanced channels today.

For anything new, I'd build an agent. Building fresh on a product in maintenance mode is a migration you're scheduling for later.

When should you use an Agentforce Service agent?

  • Customers ask the same questions in many different ways.
  • Answers already live in Knowledge articles you can ground on.
  • You want the tool to take actions, like looking up or updating records, not just collect info.
  • You want one experience across messaging, chat, voice and self-service.

Setup lives in Agentforce Studio: a Service agent template, an agent user with minimal access, subagents and actions, a data library for Knowledge, Preview testing, then commit and activate (Salesforce Help).

How do you move from a bot to an agent?

  1. Inventory your bot's dialogs. Each common intent becomes a candidate subagent or action.
  2. Try Create Agent from Bot. Salesforce released this option in beta: it generates agent topics and actions from the bot's intents and dialogs, and the bot stays active while you build (release note). It needs an Agentforce Service Agent license.
  3. Ground the agent on Knowledge instead of copying canned bot answers.
  4. Swap the routing in your Omni-Channel flow from the bot to the agent, keeping a fallback queue.
  5. Run both in parallel on a test channel, compare deflection and handoff quality, then switch.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Starting a new bot project in 2026. Maintenance mode means no new features.
  • Trying to attach a standard bot to an enhanced channel. Clone it as an enhanced bot first.
  • Copying every bot dialog into the agent. Let Knowledge and actions do the work; scripts belong in the bot.
  • Removing the human handoff. Bots and agents both need a clean path to a rep.

FAQ

Are Einstein Bots being retired?

Not retired. Starting August 17, 2026, Einstein Bots is in maintenance mode: existing bots keep working and are supported, but no new features or enhancements are coming.

Can Einstein Bots use NLP?

Yes. Both standard and enhanced bots support the intent model, intent classification and entity recognition.

Can a bot hand off to an Agentforce agent?

Enhanced bots route through Omni-Channel flows, and those flows can route to agents, reps, queues and bots.

Which one will the exam ask about?

Both. Expect scenarios where you pick between a scripted bot and an AI agent based on requirements, plus questions on routing them with Omni-Channel.
