Hey friends,
The Salesforce Platform Developer I exam costs $200 (USD) to register, plus any tax where you live, and $100 to retake. Keeping the certification afterward doesn't cost an exam fee: once a year you complete a Trailhead maintenance badge. Salesforce now lists the exam as Salesforce Certified Platform Developer, without the "I". It's the certification people still search for as Platform Developer I, and it's the one that comes before Platform Developer II.
That covers the exam itself. Below: what a failed attempt costs, how many tries you get, whether a voucher can help, what it takes to keep the certification, and what preparing can cost. Every number comes from Salesforce Help, Trailhead Academy or the official exam guide, checked on October 28, 2026.
What the exam costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Exam registration | $200, plus applicable taxes |
| Retake | $100, plus applicable taxes |
| Yearly maintenance | A Trailhead badge, with no exam appointment |
The $200 and $100 figures come from the Platform Developer exam guide and Salesforce's exam pricing page, which puts every Developer-group exam at the same $200 and $100, Platform Developer II included. Taxes depend on where you live: Pearson, the company that handles exam checkout, collects them when you register. The guide lists one fee and two ways to sit the exam, onsite at a testing center or online with a proctor, and you register through Trailhead Academy.
The exam has no prerequisite. The listing says course attendance is highly recommended, but you don't have to take a course to register.
What a retake costs and how many tries you get
A retake is half the original price, so $100. Salesforce's retake policy says Pearson adjusts the price automatically at checkout. You get three attempts per release cycle (Salesforce ships three releases a year, Spring, Summer and Winter), with waits in between:
- After a first fail, wait 24 hours before the second attempt.
- After a second fail, wait 14 days before the third.
- After a third fail, wait until the next release cycle begins. Attempts reset then.
Here's what the exam fees add up to, before tax:
| If you pass on | Exam fees |
|---|---|
| The first try | $200 |
| The second try | $300 |
| The third try | $400 |
You need 68%, which is about 41 of the 60 scored questions. A fail costs $100, but it also costs at least a day, and usually a lot more motivation. I treat the exam fee as the price of being ready, not the price of finding out. If you want a plan for passing the first time, read how to pass the Platform Developer I exam on your first try.
Can you get a voucher or a discount?
- Partner and customer discounts. Salesforce says Signature, Premier or Partner customers may be eligible for a discounted exam voucher. The pricing page points to its voucher purchase instructions. If your employer is one of those, ask.
- Voucher rules. Per the voucher FAQ, a voucher is one-time use, tied to the exams named in its email, and not transferable or refundable. The expiration date in the email can't be extended, so book the exam well before it.
- Retakes. Whether a voucher covers a retake depends on that voucher, so read its email before you count on it.
What it costs to keep the certification
There's no renewal exam. Salesforce asks you to complete one Trailhead maintenance badge per year, and for Platform Developer that badge is on the Winter release cycle. You don't schedule a date or go to a testing location. For example, if you earned it on or before December 8, 2025, Salesforce says to pass the Platform Developer Certification Maintenance (Winter '26) badge on Trailhead by December 4, 2026. Dates can change, so check the maintenance page for the current one.
Salesforce's maintenance table lists the same badge for Platform Developer II, so one badge keeps both. If you miss the deadline, the certification expires. Per Salesforce's guidance on expired certifications, you can open a support case to request reinstatement, which isn't guaranteed, or, if it expired more than one cycle ago, retake the exam at full price. Certifications that need the expired one as a prerequisite expire too, so a lapse here can take Platform Developer II with it.
What it costs to prepare
Preparation is where the total can swing the most, and most of it can be free:
- Trailhead. Trailhead says you can learn for free with hands-on practice. The exam guide recommends the trail "Study for the Platform Developer Exam" and the trailmix "Prepare for Your Salesforce Platform Developer Certification".
- A practice org. You write Apex on this exam, so you need somewhere to run it. A free Developer Edition org is enough.
- Instructor-led training. The guide also recommends DEX450, a five-day course on Trailhead Academy. It isn't required, and I couldn't find a published price on Salesforce's listing, so check the listing before you plan around it.
- Practice tests. Prices vary by provider. Steer clear of sites that sell "real exam questions". You have to accept Salesforce's Certification Program Agreement and Code of Conduct to sit the exam, and a shortcut isn't worth risking the certification.
