Salesforce Developer Career Path: Admin to PD1 to PD2 (and What DEV 401 Became)

Header image: the Salesforce developer career path, from Admin to Platform Developer I to Platform Developer II.

Hey friends,

The usual Salesforce developer path is Platform Developer I first (with Admin before it if you're new to Salesforce), then real project experience, then Platform Developer II. From there people branch into front-end work, architecture, or Agentforce. I'm a senior Salesforce developer, and this is the path I'd recommend today.

The Salesforce developer career path: Platform Administrator, then Platform Developer I, then Platform Developer II, then branching into JavaScript Developer, App Builder or Agentforce Specialist.

Certifications mark the stages. Projects move you between them.

Do you need Admin first?

Not formally: PD1 has no prerequisite. But if you're new to Salesforce, Admin makes a big part of PD1 feel like review. I break that down in Admin vs Platform Developer I.

Platform Developer I

Trailhead's credential page describes PD1 holders as people who develop and deploy custom business logic and interfaces using the platform's programmatic capabilities. Salesforce now titles it "Platform Developer" without the "I", but it's the same exam.

To get there: my 8-week study plan, how to pass on your first try, and the full PD1 study guide.

PD1 vs PD2

Trailhead's PD2 credential page describes PD2 holders as experts in the platform's advanced programmatic capabilities and in using data modeling to build complex business logic and interfaces. In practice, PD1 proves you can write correct Apex, triggers and components. PD2 proves you can design them well at scale: advanced async, testing strategy, performance and integration-heavy code.

My advice: don't rush from PD1 to PD2. Spend time shipping real code first; PD2 rewards experience much more than study. When you're ready, my PD2 study guide lays out the exam.

What about DEV 401 and DEV 501?

You'll still see these on older resumes and job posts. They're older Salesforce developer credential names from before today's lineup. A posting that still asks for them is really asking for proven developer-level certification, and today that means Platform Developer I and Platform Developer II.

Where developers branch out

Skills that matter more than certifications

  • Bulkified, well-tested Apex. Everyone can tell the difference in code review.
  • Knowing when not to code. A senior dev's most valuable answer is often "use a flow". See That Needs Apex and Other Scary Stories.
  • Steady practice. I like code katas and CampApex for this.
  • Source control and the Salesforce CLI.

For pay, I only use sourced data, in my Salesforce developer salary post.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Nick
