Hey friends,
Platform Developer II is not a step on the Salesforce architect path. Salesforce's prerequisites page lists Platform Developer (the first exam) as the developer credential for the architect routes, not Platform Developer II. So after you pass Platform Developer II you are not choosing between two sequels. JavaScript Developer I has no prerequisite at all, and the architect route is a separate series of exams. Pick by the work you want to do next.
Everything below comes from Salesforce's own pages, checked on October 28, 2026: the prerequisites page, the certification overview, the Platform Developer II exam guide, the JavaScript Developer exam guide, the retirements page, the Technical Architect page and the Trailhead Academy pages for Application Architect and System Architect. I do not quote exam fees, because they change, so check each exam page before you book. Salesforce's pages name the exams "Platform Developer" and "JavaScript Developer" without the "I". In this post, Platform Developer I means the first exam, which Salesforce calls Platform Developer.
The short answer
| If you want to | Take next | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Get better at front-end work and JavaScript itself | JavaScript Developer I | No prerequisite, and it tests core JavaScript rather than Salesforce features. |
| Move toward designing solutions across a whole org | The architect route, starting with any one exam on it | It is a series of exams, and you can start with several of them without a prerequisite. |
| Prove deeper Apex and integration skills | You may already be there | Platform Developer II is the advanced developer exam, and no developer exam sits above it in the prerequisites list. |
| Do the most you can without extra exams | Neither yet | Use the credential on real projects first. Both options are separate commitments. |
What Platform Developer II does and does not unlock
Salesforce's prerequisites page says Platform Developer II needs the Platform Developer certification, which is why you have that one too. The exam guide repeats it. But look at where Platform Developer II appears afterwards: nowhere. It is not listed as a prerequisite for any architect exam. The architect pages ask for Platform Developer, the first exam, which you already hold if you hold Platform Developer II.
That is good news for planning. Passing Platform Developer II is not wasted on the architect route, but it also isn't required for it. Treat it as proof of advanced developer skill, not as a ticket.
The architect route in plain English
Salesforce builds architect credentials in layers. You pass several exams, and Application Architect and System Architect are each granted automatically when their set is complete. Here is what each layer needs, according to the prerequisites page and the Trailhead Academy pages.
| Credential | What you need | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Application Architect | Platform App Builder, Platform Data Architect, Platform Developer and Platform Sharing and Visibility Architect | Platform Developer II is not on the list. |
| System Architect | Platform Developer, Platform Development Lifecycle and Deployment Architect, Platform Identity and Access Management Architect and Platform Integration Architect | Platform Developer II is not on the list. |
| Technical Architect | The Architect Review Board Evaluation, plus Application Architect and System Architect | Two steps: an online evaluation, then a review board exam where you present and defend a solution. |
Two things stand out. First, the five architect exams in that table (Data Architect, Development Lifecycle and Deployment Architect, Identity and Access Management Architect, Integration Architect, and Sharing and Visibility Architect) each show no prerequisite on the prerequisites page, so you can start with whichever matches your work. Second, because you already hold Platform Developer, you already have one of the four pieces for both Application Architect and System Architect.
The Technical Architect page describes two steps: the Architect Review Board Evaluation first, then the Architect Review Board Exam. The page says the prerequisites to initially qualify are System Architect and Application Architect, and that Salesforce recommends extensive hands-on experience. That is the top of the route, not the next step after Platform Developer II.
One thing to check before you plan around it. Salesforce's certification overview lists Application Architect, but I could not find System Architect on that overview page, even though the prerequisites page and the Trailhead Academy page both describe it. Confirm it in the current catalog before you commit.
Where JavaScript Developer I fits
The JavaScript Developer exam guide describes it as validating core JavaScript skills for people who develop front-end or back-end JavaScript applications. Salesforce says candidates typically have 1 to 2 years of JavaScript experience and lists topics like data types, functions, classes, modules, the DOM, events, asynchronous programming and server-side JavaScript. It also says the skills carry over to Lightning Web Components. The exam has 60 scored multiple-choice and multiple-select questions in 105 minutes, with a 65% passing score. The guide is aligned to the Summer '22 release, so read the guide for what is tested rather than for the newest Salesforce features.
It has no prerequisite on the prerequisites page, so you could have taken it before Platform Developer I, and you can take it now. It does not unlock any architect exam. For a longer look at whether it is worth it, I wrote about the JavaScript Developer certification.
How to choose
- You mostly build user interfaces: JavaScript Developer I fits, because the exam is about JavaScript itself.
- You are asked to design how systems fit together: look at the architect route, and start with the exam closest to your daily work, such as Integration Architect if you connect systems.
- You want the Technical Architect credential: plan on a long road. You need both the Application Architect and System Architect sets, and then the review board steps.
- You are not sure: do neither yet. A certification helps most when it matches the projects you are doing or want next.

Check the retirement list before you register
Salesforce's retirements page says 24 certifications retire on February 1, 2027. Platform Developer, Platform Developer II, JavaScript Developer and Application Architect are not on it. One related exam is: Salesforce Certified B2B Solution Architect, which needs Application Architect as a prerequisite, is scheduled to retire. So check that page, and the prerequisites page, before you book an exam for a credential that builds on another one.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Platform Developer II is required for the architect route. The prerequisites page asks for Platform Developer.
- Assuming JavaScript Developer I leads to the architect route. It has no prerequisite and unlocks nothing on the architect list.
- Planning from an old blog post. Prerequisites and exam names change. Read the current prerequisites page.
- Counting the Technical Architect as one more exam. It is a review board with an evaluation step and an exam step.

What should I do after Platform Developer II?
Pick based on your work. JavaScript Developer I is a separate exam with no prerequisite, and the architect route is a separate series of exams. Neither requires the other, and you are not obliged to do either.
Is Platform Developer II a prerequisite for the architect certifications?
No. Salesforce's prerequisites page lists Platform Developer, not Platform Developer II, for Application Architect and System Architect.
What are the prerequisites for Application Architect?
Platform App Builder, Platform Data Architect, Platform Developer and Platform Sharing and Visibility Architect. The credential is granted when all four are complete.
What are the prerequisites for System Architect?
Platform Developer, Platform Development Lifecycle and Deployment Architect, Platform Identity and Access Management Architect and Platform Integration Architect.
Do I need JavaScript Developer I to take the architect exams?
No. It has no prerequisite and it is not on any architect prerequisite list.
What do I need for the Technical Architect credential?
Salesforce says you complete the Architect Review Board Evaluation and then the Architect Review Board Exam. The page says the prerequisites to initially qualify are the System Architect and Application Architect credentials.
Is JavaScript Developer I retiring?
It is not on Salesforce's list of certifications retiring on February 1, 2027.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Nick
