Hey friends,
The Salesforce JavaScript Developer certification is worth it if JavaScript is the part of Salesforce you actually work in, or if you are a web developer new to Salesforce and want a credential anyone can verify. It is not worth it as your first exam if your goal is Apex and a Salesforce developer job: take Platform Developer first. That's my opinion, and the rest of this post shows the facts behind it.
Everything below comes from Salesforce's own pages, checked on October 28, 2026. Salesforce now calls the exam "Salesforce Certified JavaScript Developer." You may still see it written as "JavaScript Developer I" in older articles. It is the same exam. I don't know of any official data on pay or hiring for this certification, so I won't pretend to have it. Instead I'll show you what the exam tests and what it leaves out, so you can judge the fit yourself.
Who it's worth it for
| Your situation | Is JavaScript Developer worth it? |
|---|---|
| You build Lightning web components and want to prove you know the language underneath | Yes. The exam covers the JavaScript language itself, which Lightning web components are built on. |
| You're a web developer new to Salesforce | Yes, as a first credential. It has no prerequisite and tests skills you already use. |
| You want to be a Salesforce developer and write Apex | Not first. It tests no Apex or SOQL. Take Platform Developer first. |
| You are an admin moving toward clicks and Flow | No. Platform App Builder fits you better. |
| You are still learning JavaScript | Not yet. The guide describes a candidate with 1 to 2 years of JavaScript experience. |
What the exam covers
The official exam guide splits the exam into seven sections. The exam has 60 scored questions, plus up to five unscored ones, with 105 minutes to finish and a 65% pass mark.
| Section | Weight |
|---|---|
| Objects, Functions, and Classes | 25% |
| Variables, Types, and Collections | 23% |
| Browser and Events | 17% |
| Asynchronous Programming | 13% |
| Server Side JavaScript (Node.js) | 8% |
| Debugging and Error Handling | 7% |
| Testing | 7% |
Notice what's missing: there is no Apex, no SOQL, no Salesforce data model and no governor limits (the per-transaction caps Salesforce puts on code). The skills apply to any JavaScript framework, and Salesforce's guide names the Lightning component framework as one of them.
JavaScript Developer vs Platform Developer
| Compare | JavaScript Developer | Platform Developer |
|---|---|---|
| What it tests | The JavaScript language, in the browser and on the server | Apex, SOQL, triggers, Lightning web components, testing and deployment on the Salesforce platform |
| Pass mark | 65% | 68% |
| Time | 105 minutes | 105 minutes |
| Prerequisite | None | None |
| Leads to | Nothing further. It is not a prerequisite for any exam. | Platform Developer II |
Both cost $200 to register and $100 to retake, per the exam pricing page. The Platform Developer guide has a User Interface section worth 25% that includes Lightning web components, and it lists JavaScript among the object-oriented languages a candidate may already know. So Platform Developer touches JavaScript, but only as it applies to Salesforce user interfaces.
Should you take it before Platform Developer?
Usually no. JavaScript Developer is not a prerequisite for Platform Developer, and Platform Developer II requires Platform Developer, not JavaScript Developer. That means you can skip the JavaScript exam and lose nothing on the path to the main developer credential.
There is one good reason to go first: you are strong in JavaScript and new to Salesforce, and you want an early win before you learn Apex. In that case it is a reasonable warm-up, because you will know most of what it tests. If you are not strong in JavaScript, learn it as part of Lightning web components instead of taking a separate exam. For the full map of exams, see my post on which developer certification to take first.
Things to know before you book
- The exam content is older. The exam guide says the questions align to the Summer '22 release. JavaScript changes slowly, but check the guide for updates before you study.
- The superbadge requirement is gone. Older articles say you must earn the Lightning Web Components Specialist superbadge. Per Salesforce's superbadge retirement FAQ, that requirement was retired on October 1, 2025, and passing the exam earns the certification.
- It stays on the list. It appears on Salesforce's certification overview with no retirement note, unlike several other developer exams marked as retiring.
- It needs yearly maintenance. Every certification needs one Trailhead maintenance badge a year, and JavaScript Developer has its own badge on the maintenance page, separate from Platform Developer's.
If you decide to go for it, my JavaScript Developer study guide walks through every section, and I explain one of the trickiest topics in the JavaScript event loop.

Is the Salesforce JavaScript Developer certification worth it?
It is worth it if you work with Lightning web components or JavaScript on Salesforce, or you are a web developer new to Salesforce who wants a verifiable credential. It is a weaker first choice for someone who wants to write Apex.
Should I take JavaScript Developer before Platform Developer?
Usually not. Neither exam is a prerequisite for the other, and Platform Developer II requires Platform Developer. Take JavaScript Developer first only if you are strong in JavaScript and want an early win before learning Apex.
Is JavaScript Developer the same as JavaScript Developer I?
Yes. Salesforce's exam guide now calls it Salesforce Certified JavaScript Developer, and older articles may say JavaScript Developer I.
How hard is the Salesforce JavaScript Developer exam?
It has 60 scored questions, 105 minutes and a 65% pass mark, and the guide describes a candidate with 1 to 2 years of JavaScript experience. It is a language exam, so reading and predicting code matters more than Salesforce knowledge.
Does the JavaScript Developer exam cover Lightning web components?
Not directly. The outline lists JavaScript topics only, and Salesforce says the skills apply to any framework, including Lightning components. Lightning web components are on the Platform Developer exam.
How much does the JavaScript Developer exam cost?
$200 to register and $100 to retake, plus applicable taxes, per Salesforce's pricing page.
Hope this helps!
Best,
Nick
