Hey friends,
Salesforce lead management is the process of capturing potential customers as lead records, routing them to the right rep or queue with assignment rules, working them through lead statuses, and converting qualified leads into an account, a contact and (optionally) an opportunity. Get those four pieces right and your pipeline stays clean.
It's also core material for the Agentforce Sales Consultant certification, where the exam guide puts the whole lead to opportunity to quote to close cycle front and center.

Every lead decision fits one of these six steps.
What is a lead in Salesforce?
A lead is a person or company that might buy but isn't qualified yet. An opportunity is a qualified deal you're actively working. Trailhead's Create and Convert Leads unit draws this exact line, and so does the exam.
How do leads get into Salesforce?
Leads come from manual entry, imports, campaigns and web forms. Per Help's Configure Lead Management page, Web-to-Lead can capture up to 500 leads per day from your website. Set matching and duplicate rules early so the same prospect doesn't show up three times. Our duplicate rules guide covers the setup.
How do lead assignment rules work?
An assignment rule is a list of entries checked in order. Per Help's Create Assignment Rules page, Salesforce evaluates each entry and assigns the lead to the first match's user or queue, then stops. If nothing matches, the lead goes to the default Web-to-Lead owner or the admin doing the import.
- One active rule. Per the assignment rule guidelines, only one lead assignment rule can be active at a time.
- Works for every source. Rules fire for manual leads, Web-to-Lead and Data Import Wizard imports.
- Up to 25 filter criteria per entry, so complex routing usually means more entries, not bigger ones.
- Queues for pools. Send leads to a queue when reps should pull work instead of getting it pushed.
How should you set up lead status?
Lead Status tracks where a lead is, for example Open - Not Contacted, Working - Contacted and Qualified. One status is marked Converted, and that's the value the record gets on conversion. Keep the list short and write down what each value means, or reps will all use them differently.
How do you prioritize leads?
Einstein Lead Scoring uses machine learning on your past conversions to score which current leads look most like ones that converted. That's simpler and usually more accurate than manual points rules. Marketing teams using Account Engagement can add scoring and grading, as Trailhead's lead qualification module shows.
I learned most of what I know by testing myself fast and often. Focus on Force was the resource I loved early on, and rapid-fire practice tests were what made things stick. Cert Lab is my version of that: quick tests, explanations with current Help links and screenshots. Certs brought me interviews, hires, raises and new domains to work in, but they work best alongside hands-on experience, not instead of it.

Per Trailhead's lead conversion unit, Salesforce uses the lead's data to create a business account, a contact and an opportunity. You can pick an existing account instead of creating one, or skip the opportunity. With person accounts enabled and no company name, the lead becomes a person account. Map custom lead fields to account, contact and opportunity fields so data isn't lost.
Lead management best practices
- Always set a fallback owner. Unmatched leads should land with someone, not vanish.
- Block duplicates at the door. Cleaning up later costs far more.
- Define statuses with sales. Agree on what Qualified means before you build anything.
- Map custom fields for conversion. Unmapped fields don't carry over.
- Measure it. Track conversion rate and speed to lead, then win rate further down the funnel.
FAQ
How many lead assignment rules can be active?
One at a time. Put all routing logic into entries on that rule.
What happens if no assignment rule entry matches?
The lead goes to the default Web-to-Lead owner, or to the admin running the import.
Can I convert a lead without creating an opportunity?
Yes. Select the option to skip the opportunity when you convert.
Is lead management on the Sales Consultant exam?
Yes. The lead to opportunity to quote to close cycle runs through the Sales Lifecycle and Practical Application sections.
