Hey friends,
A Salesforce administrator is the person who configures and maintains a company's Salesforce org so people can do their jobs: setting up users and access, customizing objects and page layouts, building automation, keeping data clean and rolling out new features. No coding is required, though good admins think a lot like builders.
Trailhead describes admins as the company's trusted advisor for Salesforce, not just the person who resets passwords. That matches what I've seen on every project I've worked on.
What does a Salesforce admin do day to day?
A Salesforce admin spends the day turning business requests into changes in Salesforce. Trailhead's Work with Your Salesforce Admin unit lists what many admins do:
- Advise on the best way to customize Salesforce to fit how people work
- Design automated processes so work goes faster
- Help the company learn and adopt new features
- Gather feedback from users and make improvements
- Design and deliver training
Admins also hold special system administrator permissions to customize and configure the org. In a small company that might be one solo admin. In a big one it's a team, often next to developers and business analysts.

The mix changes by company, but these six buckets show up almost everywhere.
What skills does a Salesforce admin need?
A Salesforce admin needs platform skills plus people skills. The official Administrator exam guide is the best map of the platform side, because it lists what Salesforce expects an admin with 6+ months of experience to know:
| Exam section | Weight | What it means on the job |
|---|---|---|
| Data and Analytics Management | 17% | Imports, data quality, reports and dashboards |
| Configuration and Setup | 15% | Users, security, company settings |
| Object Manager and Lightning App Builder | 15% | Objects, fields, page layouts, Lightning pages |
| Automation | 15% | Flow and approvals |
| Sales and Marketing Applications | 10% | Leads, opportunities, campaigns |
| Service and Support Applications | 10% | Cases and support processes |
| Productivity and Collaboration | 10% | Activities, Chatter, mobile |
| Agentforce | 8% | AI features admins set up |
On the people side: asking good questions, saying "let me understand the problem first", writing clear release notes and training users without making them feel dumb. Honestly, that half separates good admins from great ones.
How do you become a Salesforce administrator?
You become a Salesforce admin by learning the platform on Trailhead, earning the Administrator certification and getting hands-on reps, ideally in a real org. Here's the path I'd follow:
- Learn the basics. Objects, records, fields and apps. My Salesforce basics guide covers them in one sitting.
- Optional first cert: Platform Foundations. It's built for people with up to 6 months of user experience and has no prerequisite.
- Earn the Salesforce Certified Platform Administrator credential. 60 questions, 105 minutes, 68% to pass.
- Get real reps. Volunteer, help a nonprofit, or become the super user on your team. My post on entry-level admin jobs has more ideas.
- Go deeper. Platform Administrator II when you're ready.
Here's why I care about this. Certs have opened real doors for me: interviews, a new job, raises and the chance to work in new parts of Salesforce. I studied with Focus on Force early on and learned fastest from rapid-fire practice tests, so that's what I built Cert Lab around, with current links and screenshots. One honest caveat: hiring managers still want experience. Use the cert to get in the room, and bring stories of what you've done.

- Saying yes to every request. Ask what problem the user is solving first. Half the time a report or list view fixes it.
- Building in production. Test in a sandbox, then deploy.
- Granting System Administrator to fix access. Use permission sets instead.
- Skipping documentation. Future you won't remember why that flow exists.
FAQ
Do Salesforce admins need to code?
No. Admins configure Salesforce with clicks: Object Manager, Flow, permission sets and reports. Code is the developer's job.
Is Salesforce admin a good career?
I think so. Every company on Salesforce needs someone to run it. See my Salesforce admin salary post for pay.
How long does it take to become a Salesforce admin?
The exam guide expects 6 or more months of admin experience for the Administrator exam, so plan on months of hands-on practice, not weeks.
Is there a free way to prepare?
Yes. Trailhead is free, and so is my Admin Cert Lab. Free, no card, no trial.
