Hey friends,
The Salesforce Business Analyst certification has no prerequisite. You don't need the Administrator certification first. The official exam guide lists "Prerequisite: None." What it does recommend is experience: 2 years as a business analyst, including owning and delivering process improvements, and 2 years on the Salesforce Platform.
So the real question isn't "am I allowed?" It's "will Admin first make the BA exam easier?" Here's my honest answer.
What each exam expects

Same length, very different skills.
Note the Platform Administrator guide also has no formal prerequisite. Both exams are open to anyone; the experience lines are recommendations.
Does Admin first help?
It helps some people a lot and others barely at all. The BA exam doesn't ask you to configure anything. The guide says you're not expected to develop custom code or design a technical solution. But it does expect you to "demonstrate knowledge of Salesforce capabilities, align them with business needs, and recommend potential solutions." That's in Customer Discovery (17%).
| If you are.. | My advice |
|---|---|
| An experienced BA, new to Salesforce | Skip Admin. Learn platform basics (Platform Foundations level), then go straight to BA. |
| A Salesforce admin moving into BA work | Go straight to BA. You already know the platform; study the BA craft. |
| New to both | Start with Platform Foundations, get real project time, then BA. Admin is optional. |
| Aiming for an admin-plus-BA job | Do Admin first. Many job posts ask for it, and it covers the platform side well. |
What Admin really buys you on the BA exam is fluency in answer options. When a question offers "a validation rule," "a record-triggered flow" or "a sharing rule" as the recommendation, you'll know what each one does. You can get most of that from lighter study too.
Quick backstory. I loved Focus on Force and used it on my way to 17 Salesforce certifications. Over time I noticed I learned way faster when I took practice tests rapid-fire, over and over, and read the explanation for every miss. So I built Cert Lab around fast testing, with up-to-date Help links and screenshots in every explanation. It's designed to test you to success.

You can still sit the exam. Plenty of people pass with less, but you need to make up for it with practice on scenarios, because the questions read like real project situations.
- Borrow experience. Volunteer to write user stories or run a requirements session at work, even outside Salesforce.
- Practice on a free org. Sign up for a Developer Edition org and map, specify and build one small process end to end.
- Study the boundaries. The guide says candidates may need help with negotiating stakeholder conflict, setting business priorities and signing off on UAT. Those are senior moves, so the exam tests your support role, not your authority.
The order I'd take them in
- Platform Foundations if you're new to Salesforce. Light, broad, and a confidence builder.
- Business Analyst once you've had some project exposure.
- Administrator later if your role leans technical or job posts in your market ask for it.
If you're still weighing the two roles, Business Analyst vs Administrator compares them side by side.
FAQ
Is the BA exam harder than Admin?
Different, not strictly harder. Admin is broad platform knowledge. BA is judgment in scenarios. The BA passing score is higher (72% vs 68%).
Do I need to maintain the BA cert?
Yes. The guide says you complete a Business Analyst maintenance badge on Trailhead once a year.
