Hey friends,
CRM Analytics is Salesforce's native advanced analytics product. It goes beyond standard reports and dashboards by bringing in external data, handling much larger data volumes, and adding no-code AI predictions, all inside the Salesforce workflow. Salesforce calls it the native analytics experience for Salesforce CRM, formerly Einstein Analytics and Tableau CRM (Salesforce).
Standard reports and dashboards come with every org and handle most day-to-day questions. CRM Analytics is a licensed step up for when they run out of road.
Reports vs CRM Analytics at a glance

Start with reports. Reach for CRM Analytics when you hit their limits.
What standard reports and dashboards do
A report is a list of records that meet your criteria. Trailhead covers three main formats (Report Formats):
- Tabular: a simple list, the default format.
- Summary: grouped by rows, with subtotals.
- Matrix: grouped by rows and columns.
Salesforce also has joined reports, which combine report blocks. A dashboard shows key metrics with widgets, and each widget is based on a single source report (Trailhead). One gotcha: you can't use joined reports or historical trend reports as dashboard sources.
What CRM Analytics adds
Salesforce's own FAQ lists three ways CRM Analytics extends reports and dashboards (source):
- Data: incorporate external data, live query popular data lakes, transform data with visual data prep, and scale to 10 billion rows.
- Experience: visual, interactive and actionable dashboards in the flow of work.
- AI: no-code machine learning to predict outcomes, explain what drives them and surface recommended actions.
In practice that means things like a sales dashboard that blends Salesforce opportunities with billing data from your ERP, or a service dashboard that predicts which cases will escalate.
A bit about how I study. Focus on Force was my favorite resource on the way to 17 Salesforce certs. But what actually made things stick was taking practice tests rapid-fire, again and again. That's the loop Cert Lab is built on: quick questions, explanations with current links and screenshots, then go again.

| Question | Use |
|---|---|
| How many open opportunities does each rep have? | A summary report |
| Pipeline by stage and month on one screen | A matrix report on a dashboard |
| Revenue blended with data from another system | CRM Analytics |
| Which deals are likely to close this quarter, and why? | CRM Analytics with predictions |
| Enterprise-wide analytics beyond the CRM | Tableau (Salesforce's broader BI platform) |
Salesforce positions CRM Analytics for insights inside Salesforce and Tableau for broad business intelligence across the whole company. They're complementary.
What Platform Foundations expects
The Platform Foundations exam guide gives Reports and Dashboards 15%, with two objectives: describe reports and describe dashboards. Know the formats, what a dashboard widget is built on, and that CRM Analytics is the advanced analytics product for when standard reports aren't enough. The Salesforce Ecosystem section (32%) can also ask which product fits a use case.
For hands-on practice with the standard tools, see my reports and dashboards guide. To explore CRM Analytics, Trailhead has a CRM Analytics Basics module and a Build and Administer CRM Analytics trail.
