Hey friends,
For beginners, the best Salesforce training is free: Trailhead teaches every core concept with hands-on practice orgs, and the Trailblazer Community answers your questions. Paid training is worth it in one place: focused practice tests when you're preparing for a certification, because that's where free material runs thin.
Here's how I'd spend your time and money if you were starting from zero today.
What can you learn for free?
Almost everything. Trailhead's Trailhead Basics module lays out the pieces:
- Badges: bite-sized units with interactive challenges.
- Trails: guided learning paths made of modules and projects.
- Trailmixes: your own custom paths you can share.
- Superbadges: real-world business problems you solve in an org.
- Certifications: proof of your skills for your résumé.
Add a free Trailhead Playground (a practice org) and the Trailblazer Community, which has been helping people learn Salesforce since 2006, and you have a full free classroom.
What's a good Salesforce training path for beginners?
Do these in order. Each link is a free Trailhead module.
- What Salesforce is: Salesforce User Basics. Objects, records, fields and the core standard objects. My plain-English CRM explainer is a quick primer.
- Using it like a user: Accounts and Contacts and Leads and Opportunities.
- How the platform works: Platform Basics, where you also create your Trailhead Playground.
- Data and security: Data Modeling and Data Security.
- Reports: Reports and Dashboards.
- A first cert: the Platform Foundations cert prep module, then practice tests.
That path lines up with the four sections of the Platform Foundations exam: Salesforce Ecosystem (32%), Navigation (28%), Data Model (25%) and Reports & Dashboards (15%). It's a 40-question, 70-minute exam with a 62% passing score and no prerequisite, so it's a realistic first goal.
A bit about how I study. I loved Focus on Force when I was earning my first certifications, and I learned fastest from rapid-fire practice tests, not from rereading. So Cert Lab is built around fast testing, with every explanation linked to current Salesforce Help pages and screenshots. Certifications got me interviews, hires, raises and moves into new domains. Experience still matters most, so pair the cert with something real you can talk about.

Free for learning, paid for focused practice.
I'd pay for training in three situations:
- You're preparing for an exam. Trailhead's cert prep units have a handful of questions per section. You need hundreds, with explanations, to find your gaps.
- You want structure and a deadline. Some people learn better with a course that tells them what to do each day.
- You need depth on one skill. For example, my Flow Builder course on Udemy goes deeper on automation than any single module.
Before you pay, check the course against the official exam guide and Trailhead. If most of it repeats what Trailhead already gives you for free, skip it.
What mistakes do beginners make?
- Collecting badges without a goal. Pick a target cert and follow its sections.
- Reading without doing. Build the thing in your Playground. Break it, then fix it.
- Skipping reports and security. They feel boring and they show up everywhere, on exams and in interviews.
- Thinking a cert replaces experience. Volunteer, build a small project for a nonprofit or a friend's business, and talk about that in interviews.
What comes after your first cert?
Most people go to the Administrator cert next. My Salesforce Administrator study guide and free Admin certification resources are the next steps, and entry-level admin jobs covers the job hunt.
If you learn best by testing yourself, the Platform Foundations Cert Lab is built for that: short quizzes, then explanations for every option.
