How to Win $4,000,000 in Vegas

Happy Saturday everyone!

Fun story for you this week. It starts last summer when I was at my friends house for dinner.

There was another guy there watching basketball. His name was Adam. I found out that Adam used to be a teacher but had moved to Las Vegas (where I live) to play poker and bet sports full time.

Naturally, after watching the basketball game for a bit, Adam made a bet on it through an app on his phone. As fortune would have it, instead of making his normal $1,000 bet – he bet $10,000 by mistake instead. Oops!

Suddenly Adam was very focused. Everyone else at dinner heard about Adam’s “misclick” and we were now all very interested in basketball too! When Adam’s team scored we cheered. When Adam’s team went down on points we were worried.

I have no idea who played in that game but it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had watching basketball (I’m not really a sports guy). Adam’s team ultimately won and his bet paid off – minus a few heart palpitations. What a life.

Fast forward to this summer, and the World Series of Poker is in town. This is a big deal in the poker world and players from around the globe fly to Las Vegas to play in a series of high stakes tournaments.

The biggest tournament of all is called The Main Event, with cash prizes in the millions of dollars. This year 10,043 people paid a $10,000 entry fee to create a prize pool of $93,339,900 – the biggest in poker history. Like I said, it’s a big deal.

Despite previously “playing” poker full time (playing in quotes because I wasn’t very good) I don’t usually pay attention to the WSOP.

So imagine my suprise when another friend from that dinner texted me:

“Do you remember Adam? He’s got the chip lead at the final table of the main event!”

Whatttt!? The final table are the last 9 players of the tournament. The chip leads means Adam is currently in first place. 1st has a $12,000,000 cash prize. Lets goooo Adam!!

It all played out, Adam came in third and won $4,000,000. Here he is before the final table started standing in the front of the pack. Look at that grin!

You might be thinking, neat story – but how is any of this relevant to Salesforce?

Well, remember how Adam used to be a teacher and moved to Vegas to play poker and bet sports full time? I’m sure some people told him he was crazy, it would never work, and he should stick with his real job (probably wise advice on balance).

But Adam had a dream. First he dreamed he could do something he loved instead of being a full time teacher. Next he dreamed he could play in a big tournament and win (he did pay $10k to enter the tournament just like everyone else).

Then he backed up his dream with action. Adam’s been in Vegas a while – he didn’t win his very first year out here. The tournament is so hard to win that he might never have won at all. But with a vision, and with persistence, he made a dream come true to the tune of $4,000,000.

The point is – you can’t make a dream come true if you don’t know what it is.

So what’s your Salesforce dream? Do you want to be a developer? To make six figures? Or is Salesforce just a stepping stone for you?

There’s no right answer. What’s important is getting clear on exactly what is you really want – that way you can take right action.

For me, I’d love to one day be a Salesforce Certified Technical Architect.

What’s your dream?

Have a great week,

Nick

P.S. Some days I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing in “business”. Yesterday was one of those days! As a result, I cut the price of my flow course down to $5 as a crazy experiment. For some reason, having it the same price as a gourmet coffee got stuck in my head. If you’re interested, you can check it out here.
