What Reddit Says About the Salesforce BA Exam (and What’s Right)

Hey friends,

Reddit's take on the Salesforce Business Analyst exam is mostly right: it isn't technical, process diagrams are a small slice, and Trailhead plus good practice questions gets most people through. Where Reddit goes wrong is "it's just common sense", which leads people to under-prepare, and old advice that you need the Admin cert first.

I read through a recent r/salesforce thread on the BA certification (January 2026) and checked each claim against the official exam guide and Business Analyst FAQ. Here's the scorecard.

Table comparing five common Reddit claims about the Salesforce Business Analyst exam with a verdict and what the official exam guide says.

The claims that hold up are about format. The one that hurts people is about effort.

"It's the easiest cert I've taken": is it?

Several people in the thread called it easy, and one said it was the easiest of their five certs. Others mentioned people failing it. Both are true, and the difference is background.

The exam guide describes the target candidate as having 2 years of business analyst experience and 2 years of Salesforce Platform experience. If that's you, a lot of the questions will feel like your normal week. If it isn't, the same questions feel like four reasonable answers and no obvious winner.

"It's not a technical exam": mostly true

The guide lists what a candidate is not expected to do, including developing custom code, designing a technical solution and managing a project. So no Apex, and no architecture diagrams.

But don't read "not technical" as "no Salesforce". Customer Discovery (17%) asks you to analyze a customer's Salesforce environments for opportunities and constraints, and to know Salesforce capabilities well enough to recommend solutions. You need to know what the platform can do, even if you won't build it.

"Not many diagram questions": true, with a catch

Business Process Mapping is 12% of the exam, which works out to about 7 of the 60 scored questions. So yes, it's a small slice.

The catch: 7 questions is still the difference between passing and failing for a lot of people, and those questions are very learnable. Know when to use a capability map, SIPOC or a UPN process map, and how detailed a compliance process should be. My business process mapping guide covers it.

"It's just common sense": half true

One commenter said they got most questions by process of elimination. That's a real technique on this exam, because the questions are scenarios asking what a BA should do first, next or best.

But "common sense" is Salesforce's version of common sense. The exam rewards specific habits: involve the right stakeholders before deciding, confirm the current state before designing the future state, write acceptance criteria that state intent rather than a solution, and get UAT sign-off from the business. If your instincts differ from those, you'll pick the confident wrong answer.

I learned most of what I know by testing myself. I used Focus on Force (and loved it) on my way to 17 Salesforce certs, and I found I learned faster when I took practice tests rapid-fire, over and over, instead of rereading notes. Cert Lab is my version of that, with fresh links and screenshots in every explanation. Certs have brought me a lot: I learn what matters fast, I have the credential, and they've opened doors to interviews and raises.

"You need the Admin cert first": false

The BA certification launched with the Platform Administrator cert as a prerequisite, so older posts still say this. Per the official FAQ, that requirement was removed effective May 2, 2023. The exam guide lists the prerequisite as none.

Admin knowledge still helps with the capabilities questions. If you're deciding between the two, see Business Analyst vs Administrator.

"Trailhead plus practice exams is enough": often true

This was the most common advice in the thread, and it matches what Salesforce recommends: the exam guide, the BA certification trailmix and the Cert Prep: Salesforce Business Analyst module. Several people named Focus on Force too, which I loved using myself.

One commenter's note stuck with me: the gap after Trailhead is scenario questions, not memorization. That's my experience as well. Whatever you use, make sure most of your practice is scenarios, and review why each wrong option is wrong.

"Don't overprepare, just book it": it depends

If you already do BA work every day, there's truth here. Finish the core material, run timed practice, and book it. If you're newer, book the exam once you're scoring comfortably above the 72% passing score on practice tests, not before. Retakes cost money and confidence.

If you learn best by testing yourself, the Business Analyst Cert Lab is built for that: short quizzes, then explanations for every option.
