Unlock every sectionSL1: Turn business goals and KPIs into a Sales Cloud solution
You’ll be able to: start from the customer’s goals, pick SMART metrics and KPIs, and decide which Sales Cloud features and sales processes the requirements call for.
Every Sales Cloud question on this exam starts with a business requirement or a KPI. Your job as consultant is to work backward: what does the business want to improve, how will we know it improved, and which feature gets us there with the least complexity? Trailhead’s rollout module frames it as connecting your implementation to the company’s vision so the system is used and trusted.
Build the success team first
Trailhead names four key players: the executive sponsor, who prioritizes and approves how the team’s time is spent on Sales Cloud; the operations manager, who knows the most about the day-to-day sales process; end users, who test and give feedback; and the admin, who makes changes and manages the implementation. One person can cover more than one role, but fill every role so you hear a range of perspectives. A pipeline process designed without end users often looks right on paper and goes unused.
Make the metrics SMART
Goals become measurable when they’re Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. “Improve sales” is not a requirement; “raise win rate on new-business opportunities from 20% to 25% by Q4” is. Each goal should map to a field you can report on.
From goal to KPI to Sales Cloud
| Business goal | Example KPI | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Grow pipeline | New opportunities created per rep per month | Opportunities, created date, owner |
| Close more of what we work | Win rate (won ÷ closed) | Opportunity stage type Closed/Won |
| Shorten the sales cycle | Average days from created to closed won | Opportunity dates, formula or report |
| Predict revenue | Forecast vs quota by period | Collaborative Forecasts and quotas |
| Respond to leads faster | Time from lead creation to first activity | Leads, tasks, Sales Engagement cadences |
Activity metrics vs outcome metrics
Trailhead’s sales performance module splits KPIs into activity metrics (calls, emails, meetings: things a rep controls) and outcome metrics (bookings, win rate, quota attainment: results). Activity metrics are leading indicators you can coach on this week; outcomes tell you whether the coaching worked. Good dashboards pair them.
Model the sales processes
If the business sells in genuinely different ways (for example new business versus renewals), give each its own sales process (the set of opportunity stages) and expose it through an opportunity record type and page layout. Don’t create separate processes for small differences; extra processes add maintenance and split your reporting.
Exam trap
When a scenario asks for the best solution to a KPI requirement, prefer standard features and reports over custom code. Custom development is the answer only when a standard feature truly can’t meet the need.
Predict, then reveal
A VP wants “better pipeline visibility”. What’s your first consulting move?
Show the answer
Turn it into specific, measurable KPIs (for example pipeline coverage by stage and period) and agree on them before choosing features.
Apply it
- Write one vague sales goal you’ve heard and rewrite it as a SMART goal.
- For that goal, list the object and fields you’d report on.
- Name one activity metric and one outcome metric that would show progress.
Practice questions
Ten exam-style questions on this lesson. Answer each one before you open it.
Question 1. A sales director says, “We need to sell more.” What should the consultant do first?
- A. Build a custom forecasting app now
- B. Turn on every Sales Cloud feature available
- C. Ask the admin to add twenty new fields
- D. Define SMART KPIs
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: D. Vague goals must become specific, measurable KPIs before any solution is chosen.
Building before the goal is defined leads to unused features.
Question 2. Which two are outcome metrics? (Choose 2.)
- A. Win rate
- B. Quota attainment
- C. Emails sent by each rep per week
- D. Number of calls logged per day
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: A, B. Outcome metrics measure results like win rate and quota attainment.
Calls and emails are activity metrics a rep controls.
Question 3. Why pair activity metrics with outcome metrics on a sales dashboard?
- A. Activities lead results
- B. Activity metrics replace the forecast entirely
- C. Outcomes can’t be reported in Salesforce
- D. Executives only care about activity counts
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: A. Activity measures are designed to lead salespeople to outcome measures, so you can coach on them; outcomes confirm the effect.
Outcomes are reportable, and activities don’t replace forecasts.
Question 4. A company sells new business and renewals with very different stages. What fits best?
- A. One process with forty optional stages
- B. A custom object for each type of renewal
- C. Two sales processes
- D. Separate orgs for new business and renewals
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: C. Different ways of selling get separate sales processes exposed through record types.
The others add complexity or break reporting.
Question 5. Which role prioritizes and approves how the team’s time is spent on Sales Cloud?
- A. An outside auditor who joins after go-live
- B. Executive sponsor
- C. The AppExchange partner’s support desk
- D. A single sales rep picked at random
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B. Trailhead defines the executive sponsor as the person who prioritizes and approves how the team’s time is spent.
The others don’t hold that authority.
Question 6. Which goal is written in SMART form?
- A. Use Salesforce more often and more fully
- B. Make the sales team better at selling
- C. Improve customer happiness wherever possible
- D. Raise win rate to 25% by Q4
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: D. It’s specific, measurable, time-bound and relevant.
The others can’t be measured or dated.
Question 7. Which two should be on the success team that designs a new opportunity process? (Choose 2.)
- A. A vendor who has never seen the business
- B. Field sales reps
- C. Only the finance team, working alone
- D. The Salesforce admin
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B, D. End users know the real process and the admin builds and supports it.
Excluding reps or relying on outsiders produces unused processes.
Question 8. A KPI is “average days to close a deal.” Which data does it rely on?
- A. Opportunity dates
- B. Account hierarchy levels
- C. Lead source picklist values
- D. Campaign member statuses
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: A. Cycle time uses the opportunity’s created and close dates.
The others don’t measure cycle time.
Question 9. A requirement can be met with standard reports or with an Apex-built dashboard. What should the consultant recommend?
- A. A third-party BI tool bought on day one
- B. Standard reports
- C. A spreadsheet maintained by each rep
- D. Apex, because it’s always more flexible
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: B. Prefer declarative, standard features unless they truly can’t meet the need.
Custom code and extra tools add cost and maintenance.
Question 10. A team wants to respond to inbound leads faster. Which KPI fits?
- A. Number of price books created
- B. Total number of accounts in the org
- C. Lead response time
- D. Count of dashboards in each folder
Show the answer and explanation
Answer: C. Time from lead creation to first activity measures responsiveness.
The others don’t relate to lead speed.
