SYS3: Sandbox Types and Environment Strategy

You’ll be able to: match each sandbox type to a development, integration, testing or staging purpose, and plan refreshes, access and documentation for the environment set.

Four sandbox types, four purposes

A sandbox is a copy of your org in a separate environment, so you can develop, test and train without touching production. Salesforce Help describes four types, and the Well-Architected DevOps patterns say to match the type to the activity instead of using one type for everything.

Sandbox types, refresh intervals and typical use

TypeRefresh intervalDataTypical use
DeveloperEvery dayNo data automatically; 200 MB can be imported or createdFeature work, unit testing and rapid iteration, one dedicated sandbox for each developer
Developer ProEvery dayNo data automatically; 1 GB can be imported or createdHigher storage limit for testing features that rely on a subset of records
Partial CopyEvery 5 daysSample of production data, up to 10k parent records and related child records or 5 GB; a Sandbox Template is requiredIntegration testing with representative data
Full CopyEvery 29 daysFull copy of production data; templates may be used but aren’t requiredPerformance testing, staging, QA and UAT at the end of the development cycle

Licenses come in bundles: the Developer Pro add-on includes 5 Developer sandboxes, the Partial Copy add-on includes 10 and the Full Copy add-on includes 15. Preview sandboxes are not part of the production deployment promotion path, and a team rarely needs more than two of them.

Run the environments, not just create them

Treat sandboxes as managed assets. Document the purpose, refresh schedule, data content and access of each one. Restrict Full Copy access to the roles that need production data. Release sandboxes that nobody uses so that licenses don’t sit idle. When several sandboxes need a refresh, start them gradually, because they are processed in series and not in parallel.

Exam trap

Don’t give every team a Full Copy sandbox. It is the slowest to refresh (29 days) and holds production data. Use Developer sandboxes for building and a Partial or Full Copy only where realistic data is needed.

Predict, then reveal

A team needs to test an integration against representative customer records, and refreshing weekly is acceptable. Which type fits?

Show the answer

Partial Copy: a sample of production data through a template, refreshable every 5 days.

Try it 5 min · a Developer Edition org or a sketch pad

  1. Write the four types as a column and note the refresh interval of each from memory.
  2. Place four activities (feature build, integration test, UAT, performance test) in the right type.
  3. List the documentation you would keep for each sandbox in a strategy.

Practice questions

Ten exam-style questions on this lesson. Answer each one before you open it.

Question 1. According to the Well-Architected patterns, how do individual developers use Developer sandboxes?

  • A. As the main location for UAT before the changes go to production for release
  • B. For feature work and rapid iteration in a dedicated sandbox
  • C. As the shared integration test environment for the teams in a program
  • D. To hold a full copy of production for data migration checks and staging
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. A Developer sandbox for each developer supports isolated feature work.

Integration, data migration and UAT use other types.

Question 2. Which sandbox type requires a Sandbox Template?

  • A. Developer
  • B. Full Copy, because production data must be selected to create it
  • C. Partial Copy
  • D. Developer Pro
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C. Partial Copy sandboxes need a template to choose the sample data.

Full Copy may use templates but doesn’t require them.

Question 3. What does Help describe as the typical use of a Full Copy sandbox?

  • A. QA and UAT at the very end of the development life cycle
  • B. A playground for admins to review setup changes
  • C. Loading a small subset of records for early feature tests of new code
  • D. Daily proof of concept work by each developer
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. Full Copy holds production data and fits the end of the cycle.

The other uses describe Developer and Developer Pro sandboxes.

Question 4. How does a Developer Pro sandbox differ from a Developer sandbox?

  • A. It copies production data automatically at creation
  • B. It requires a template that selects the sample of production records
  • C. It refreshes every 5 days instead of every day
  • D. It allows 1 GB of data instead of 200 MB
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D. Both refresh daily and start empty; Developer Pro has the higher storage limit.

Partial Copy is the type with a 5-day refresh and a template.

Question 5. Which two sandbox types include no production data automatically? (Choose 2.)

  • A. Developer
  • B. Partial Copy
  • C. Full Copy, which a team can still limit by using a template
  • D. Developer Pro
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A, D. Developer and Developer Pro start without data.

Partial Copy includes sample data and Full Copy includes all data.

Question 6. Which environment do the DevOps patterns recommend for integration testing?

  • A. A Full Copy sandbox that the whole team uses for daily development work
  • B. Scratch orgs that are shared across the feature teams for daily integration
  • C. Partial Copy sandboxes with representative data configured through templates
  • D. Developer sandboxes with test data that each of the developers creates by hand
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C. Partial Copy plus templates gives representative data at lower cost than Full Copy.

Developer sandboxes are for individual work.

Question 7. What should happen to access in a Full Copy sandbox that holds production data?

  • A. Access is restricted to roles that need production data
  • B. Access is granted by each developer to the testers they trust the most
  • C. Access is limited to the integration user alone
  • D. Access is opened to the entire development team
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: A. The patterns restrict Full Copy access and mask data for non-production use when appropriate.

Open access exposes PII to the whole team.

Question 8. Why does a bulk refresh of many sandboxes look slow?

  • A. They each wait for production to finish its upgrade
  • B. They copy the full data set before the template is applied to each one
  • C. They are limited to one refresh for each license type
  • D. They are processed in series, one at a time, not in parallel
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: D. Help advises not refreshing or cloning many sandboxes at one time.

Processing is sequential, so each waits for the earlier ones.

Question 9. Which environments form the official deployment pipeline to production?

  • A. Every sandbox that was refreshed this month
  • B. Non-Preview environments
  • C. Any sandbox that a developer marks as ready to release
  • D. Preview sandboxes that run the next release
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: B. Preview sandboxes validate; deployable changes live in Non-Preview environments.

Preview is used for release validation only.

Question 10. Which add-on is bundled with 10 Developer sandboxes?

  • A. Developer Pro Sandbox
  • B. Full Sandbox
  • C. Partial Copy Sandbox
  • D. Sandbox Template, which a Partial Copy needs when it is created
Show the answer and explanation

Answer: C. Developer Pro includes 5, Partial Copy 10 and Full 15.

The numbers are 5, 10 and 15 in order of size.

Before you move on

1. Which type requires a template?

Show answer

Partial Copy.

2. How often can a Full Copy sandbox refresh?

Show answer

Every 29 days.

Key takeaways

  • Match the type to the activity: Developer for building, Partial Copy for integration tests, Full Copy for UAT and performance tests.
  • Document each sandbox, restrict Full Copy access and release unused sandboxes.
  • Refreshes are processed in series; Preview sandboxes sit outside the promotion path.
