Hey friends,
This 8-week Platform Developer I study plan takes about 7 hours a week and gives the biggest section, Process Automation and Logic (28%), three full weeks. You write real code every week in a free org, and week 8 is all timed practice exams. It's built for people who already code at work, in Salesforce or another language.
If you want the exam facts and every objective explained, start with my PD1 study guide. If you only have a month and some Apex experience, the shorter 4-week PD1 plan inside the Cert Lab is the faster route.

The official exam guide lists 60 multiple-choice questions plus up to five unscored ones, 105 minutes, a 68% passing score, and a US$200 fee (US$100 to retake). The four sections are Developer Fundamentals 27%, Process Automation and Logic 28%, User Interface 25%, and Testing, Debugging and Deployment 20%.
For working developers, the trap isn't the code. It's the platform. Experienced developers lose points on questions where the right answer is declarative (a roll-up summary or a Flow instead of a trigger) or where a governor limit makes the obvious loop wrong.
The weekly rhythm
- Mon and Tue, 45 min each: read the objectives and Trailhead modules for the week.
- Wed and Thu, 1 hr each: write the week's code in a free Developer Edition org.
- Sat, 2.5 hrs: a bigger build plus practice questions.
- Sun, 30 min: review every miss and add it to your notes.
Weeks 1 and 2: Developer Fundamentals (27%)
- Multitenancy and why governor limits exist.
- MVC and the Lightning Component Framework at a high level.
- Declarative vs programmatic: formula fields, roll-up summaries, Flow vs Apex.
- Data model: objects, relationships, external IDs.
- Use cases and limits of Agentforce for Developers.
Build this: a custom object with a master-detail child, a roll-up summary and an external ID, then load a few records by external ID. You'll need the same model in weeks 3 to 5.
Worked example: "Show the count of open child records on the parent." If the relationship is master-detail, a roll-up summary does it with no code. If it's a lookup, you need Flow or Apex. Expect the exam to hide which one it is in the scenario.
Weeks 3 to 5: Process Automation and Logic (28%)
Week 3, Apex basics: variables, constants, modifiers, interfaces, control flow, SOQL and SOSL, DML. Know exactly what a query returns, including an empty list vs an exception.
Week 4, triggers: one trigger per object with a handler class, bulkified code, the save order of execution, and how recursion and cascading happen.
Build this: a trigger that updates the parent from your week 1 model. Then insert 200 child records in one transaction from Anonymous Apex. If it fails, you've just learned the governor-limit lesson the exam tests.
Replace Child__c, Parent__c and parentId with your own object, field and record ID.
Week 5, the rest: exception handling and custom exceptions, using Flow and Apex together (invocable methods), and an intro to asynchronous Apex for debugging questions later.
Week 6: User Interface (25%)
- Lightning Web Components: framework, benefits, events.
- Calling Apex from LWC, Flow and Agentforce.
- Displaying components: Lightning components, Flow and Visualforce.
- Security: preventing injection and respecting sharing and field access.
Build this: an LWC that calls a cacheable Apex method to list your week 1 records, and put it on a Lightning page.
Week 7: Testing, Debugging and Deployment (20%)
- Test classes for triggers, controllers, classes and flows, with test data you create in the test.
- Salesforce DX, the Salesforce CLI and the Developer Console: when each one fits.
- Debug logs, and monitoring flows, async and batch jobs.
- Environments and deployment: sandboxes, change sets and source-driven deploys.
Build this: tests for your week 4 trigger and week 6 Apex, including a 200-record bulk test. Then retrieve and deploy them with the CLI:
Week 8: timed practice and booking
- Monday: a full 60-question timed practice exam, 105 minutes.
- Tuesday to Thursday: only your two weakest sections.
- Saturday: a second full timed exam.
- Book when you're at 75% or more on both. Otherwise add a week.

Coming from Admin?
If you already hold the Admin cert, you can move faster through weeks 1 and 2 and spend the extra time on Apex. If you're still deciding, read Admin vs Platform Developer I. Weighing App Builder instead? See App Builder vs Platform Developer I.
